Preview: JazzMain @ the Jazz Café this Friday (June 19)

David Carnegie brought his Barbados/Edinburgh quintet here last month, Kurt Elling brought the SNJO to Sage Gateshead, last weekend the Brian Molley Quartet came down from Glasgow to play at the Globe, I've got a superb SNJO CD (without Elling but with Mozart) awaiting review and now JazzMain are marching up Carter Bar preparatory to invading The Caff - is this the SNP exporting (or deporting) jazz?
Formed ten years ago in Edinburgh and led by tenor saxophonist, Nick Gould (pictured), JazzMain (Nick Gould tenor; Steve Grossart keys; Kevin Dorrian drums; John Hay electric bass) is one of Scotland's few 'stand-alone' jazz quartets. Their debut CD, 'A Sound for Sore Ears,' was released last year receiving both critical acclaim and strong radio airplay.
Much of the band’s set  pays homage to the 1950s and 60s Blue Note straight -ahead jazz and Latin influenced catalogue, but you'll also find some interesting arrangements of American Songbook classics, hauntingly beautiful ballads and a few musical twists, turns and jousts on some of our most popular songs.
Tenor player Nick has dropped by the Jazz Café on a number of occasions for the Tuesday night jam sessions and left a lasting impression - it will be great to hear him with his regular line-up and, going by the band's CD, it will be a night to remember. Thank goodness they haven't re-built Hadrian's Wall!
