It's become an annual thing. JazzMain think nothing of driving down from Edinburgh (and from further afield) to play a gig on Railway Street, then head straight home afterwards. The Globe's hip audience welcomed Nick (tenor sax), Steve (piano), Iain (bass) and Kevin (drums). Anticipating some Blue Note classics and more, that's pretty much what we got, with one or two surprises...
From Theme from the Odd Couple to Triste, the Edinburgh Fringe favourites (they'll be there again this year), JazzMain delivered their brand of (often swinging) modern jazz which was received with much applause. Out of Nowhere, Nica's Dream, Sunny, Fly Me to Dunoon/the Moon, Jule Styne's I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry, the on the hoof set list had something for everyone.
A brace of John Coltrane numbers came as something of a surprise. Naima and 26-2 are heavyweight numbers, but this didn't deter Nick Gould and co. In contrast, an out-of-season Autumn Leaves and a jaunty My Romance redressed the balance. Russell
