This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review – Lonely City by Allegra Levy

I have to own up and say it was several weeks ago when Lance asked me to review this CD… and I have just been a little busy, but finally I have sat down to tap out a few thoughts on this original début CD from Allegra Levy. I have to be honest and say that for me this CD was one of three  parts…. The  part  I liked, lively catchy tunes and easy on the ear, the second part  that was a mix of songs that were pretty ok, but not as appealing and a couple that were well not really my cup of tea!   
Allegra Levy has a pleasant voice for Jazz, similar in some ways to Zoe Gilby… it must be the influence of Carmen McRae, similar phrasing and a range of tonal colours.  Her sense of rhythm is excellent as she sings in a communicative and intimate way as she relates the stories of her original songs.  The first two tunes, Anxiety and I Don’t Want To Be In Love, were on my tick list, as was A New Face, Why Do I, and The Lullaby.   
The title track,  Lonely City was another that reminded me of another singer/songwriter, local to the North East!  A Better Day ,  I’m Not Okay , Clear Eyed Tango I could take or leave and Everything Green inspired by Joni Mitchel was just not for me, and to be honest neither was The Duet… but hey that’s only my thoughts and if we were all the same it would be a sad world…. I guess if you listen for yourself you will make up your own mind.
