This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Glenn Wilson - Timely.

The blurb describes this as a "Post Bop Milestone". If I were an idle, shiftless sort of person, as a teacher once described me, then that would be the review over and done with!
And yet, Post Bop Milestone, says it all! Recorded live at the Havana Nights Jazz Club, Virginia Beach, Va, this is music worthy of today. Its roots may be in yesterday, perhaps even the day before, but its relevance is now, tomorrow and the day after.
Wilson's baritone playing encompasses all the greats - the sound of Carney, the fluency of Chaloff, the creativity of Mulligan - his career spans five decades yet I've only just encountered him. Talk about having led a sheltered life (me)!
John D'earth? another one I've missed! Blue Note personified - think Hubbard, Byrd, Morgan and you've got the picture. And John Toomey? In the north east [UK] alto player Mark Toomey works the same side of the street as John Toomey and, whilst they probably aren't genetically related, should they ever meet mid-Atlantic it would, I presume, be a Stanley/Livingstone moment.
The material includes pieces by Pepper Adams, Wayne Shorter, Bob Dorough, Bob Belden, Larry Willis alongside a couple by D'earth.
The disc is entitled Timely - change the name - call it Timeless...
Glenn Wilson - Timely - is to be released February 24 on Cadence Jazz Records.
