Tori Freestone Trio – Splinter at the Bridge March 9

Tori’s Trio are currently touring with their latest CD, In the Chop House and this evening featured tunes from this latest Album… which I bought by the way… because I loved this lady’s music… what a musician!

La Barriada was introduced with reminiscences of tapas eaten in this bar on Tenerife and the view of Mt. Tide in the distance, Tori had written this tune after a lovely holiday and set us away on a superb session of Jazz to a very appreciative audience… the room had filled up nicely.  Mrs PC was a bluesy number, with the mellow tones of the tenor creating a chilled out feeling…the first of the tunes played that features on the new CD.  A traditional tune, My Lagan Love was arranged and segued into In the Chop House, the title number of the new CD.  This trio are certainly well matched; the bass complimented the saxophone and drums although I would have preferred to hear him a little louder… as occasionally he was drowned out by the superb drumming…. It’s hard to get the balance right sometimes.  The final number of the set, The Universal 4 featured a tremendous drum solo… just wow!

Set two commenced with a Jez Franks number, Bubble and Squeak.  Dave Mannington’s tune, Lonesome George, also featured on the album was inspired by the lone giant tortoise on the Galapagos Isles and was followed by a Gershwin tune with a twist… arranged by Tori it was But Not For Me.  The highlight of my evening was the next tune, a Joni Mitchell number arranged by Tori… Both Sides Now sealed the deal on the CD purchase, the lovely mellow tenor accompanied by bowed bass and mallets on drums made this arrangement just beautiful.  The final number of the night was inspired by one of Tori’s favourite sax players… can you guess who? …and her favourite pastime, Pottering Around.
