Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Trish Cowes Nonet Preview

Paul Bream's Jazz Alert gave the following details of the forthcoming concert:
TRISH CLOWES TANGENT NONET
Trish Clowes (saxophones); Gwylim Simcock (piano); Chris Montague (guitar); Calum Gourlay (bass); James Maddren (drums); Thomas Gould & Thea Spiers (violins); Adam Robinson (viola); Louise McMonagle (cello)Friday 5th October | 7.45pm
The Sage | Gateshead
Tickets £13.50 from 0191 443 4661

"No sooner had I plugged this in last week’s ‘Alert’ than Guardian critic John Fordham backed me up, firstly on Friday with an enthusiastic review of Trish Clowes’ new album, and then on Saturday with a glowing preview of this gig (“Clowes’ coolly imaginative sax-playing grows steadily more assured”). Then via Twitter I learned that she has just been named as a Radio 3 ‘New Generation Artist’: this scheme is designed to nurture young musical talent, and Trish is only the fourth jazz musician to feature in the nearly 100 nominees since it was launched in 1999.
I’m not actually claiming credit for this sudden cascade of plaudits for Trish, but I think it does reinforce my endorsement of her Sage gig."

Paul Bream.

As a further endorsement of the above, would-be concertgoers who are wavering might like to hear these two delightful tracks from Trish Clowes latest CD.
