Firstly, let me say I like this CD - I don't love it - but I do like it. The musicality is rather special with Shanker outstanding and the tunes are, generally, only a few degrees short of memorable. Difficult to categorise it, I would guess Smooth might be close.
The blurb describes it as "An exciting mix of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Merging improvisational music with World Pop and original songs."
There is a compulsion about the CD that has half of me wanting to bop around the room whilst the other half is saying - "Act your age!"
Miles' Joshua has, like most of the tracks, a Latin/jazz feel to it. Solos pop up all over the place and, in a more conventional setting would get the nod. All sorts of things spring to mind - Spiro Gyra, Grover Washington, Hoochie Coochie, New Years Eve in Downtown Rio.
I don't quite see the connection between Johnny Hartman and Britney's 2011 hit I Wanna Go but it's a good track anyway. Yes, I could party to The Verge and there's actually a percussionist on the disc named Danny Conga - you couldn't make it up! Then again, maybe you could...
Now where did I put those dancing shoes?
