CD Review: David Sanborn "Then Again" - The Anthology

(Review by Lance).
Warner Jazz present the first ever comprehensive two-disc collection of the renowned American saxophonist David Sanborn. ‘Then Again’ - The Anthology spans 20 years of his illustrious career at both Warner Bros and Elektra Records.
A six-time Grammy winner and sought-after session contributor who has sold over 6 million albums worldwide, David Sanborn is also well-known for his flawless sax performances, as well as stints as a sideman with such prestigious names as David Bowie, James Brown, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Gil Evans, Mose Allison, Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin, and Maynard Ferguson.
‘Then Again’ - The Anthology features Sanborn’s most successful and celebrated pieces, including ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Missing You’. Also included is ‘The Dream’, this year signifying the 25th anniversary of the song.
Sanborn’s involvement in the release could not have been more prevalent, handpicking each of the songs himself and taking acute care and attention over the order in which they appear. The sheer quality of Sanborn’s work is encapsulated in this release, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest saxophonists of our time.
The above is the official press release and it has to be said the 2 disc set is all that and more.
When I heard Sanborn live last year at The Barbican with Joey DeFrancesco it was a memorable experience in itself but to hear him in so many different settings as on these two discs is something else again. Such technique and a wonderful sound make this an essential addition to any aspiring sax players library.
Lance.
CD Review: Then Again - The Anthology is released by Warner Jazz on October 29, 2012.
