The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Accidental Tourists - The L.A. Sessions.

German born, Santa Monica based, Markus Berger is, like so many of today's jazz people, classically trained and it shows in his impeccable renditions of his own and other's compositions. Jazzwise his overriding influence is Bill Evans. In years to come, possibly the Evans' persuasion will be the guiding light for contemporary pianists even more so than say Bud Powell, Keith Jarrett or Herbie Hancock.

Certainly Berger has assimilated much of Bill Evans but there's also hints of Debussy and Bach in there too.
Magnusson is one of today's bass giants - listen to him on Old Country - and LaBarbera, having worked with Evans, knows exactly what to lay down in a trio setting. In particular his brushwork is outstanding. 
I may perhaps have spent too long on Bill Evans but, although it is there, Berger is still very much his own man and his playing on this, his ninth album, displays a technique and a feeling for the music comparable with any of his contemporaries.
Accidental Tourists - The L.A. Sessions (Challenge Records CR73332) is the first of what Burger hopes will be a series.
