The March meeting was a new chapter in the history of Ashington Jazz Club when a good audience welcomed The Maine Street Jazz Men and Olive, who have taken up a monthly residency at The Elephant. Over a quarter of a century ago, The River City Jazzmen occupied that role for a memorable 6 - 7 years.
We enjoyed an energetic and interesting musical evening from the very first number from this superb band.
Olive's contribution to the evenings entertainment was sadly restricted to three vocals as she was poorly but nevertheless her vocals pleased the company.
This versatile group could rely on Herbie and Jim to add their dulcet tones and Herbie the Harmonica is always a wonderful sound experience.
Instrumentally the group was well balanced and blended together like a good gin and tonic. The front line of Herbie, Ray and Jim moved between their improvised solos with ease while the back room rhythm section supported so well with an obvious bond and mutual respect.
Alan on bass and Mike on drums drove the music onward while Colin on keyboard danced effortlessly on the keys creating a pleasant blend.
A foot tapping evening and everyone went home happy. I feel sure the band appreciated the applause and will look forward to our next meeting on Wednesday, April 6th when guitarist Jim Birkett guests with the band. See you there.
