This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Customs House Big Band Open Rehearsal New Crown South Shields March 1

I arrived late but just in time to hear Sweet Georgia Brown brewing up a storm, she's put on a little weight lately but was none the worse for that. The Buddy Rich (Oliver Nelson) version of In A Mellotone followed.
The concert set started with Love For Sale, Ruth Lambert served us with Black Coffee, Witchcraft performed by the band brought Ruth back with All Right OK You Win.
Gordon Goodwin's Jazz Police came and knocked everybody out and Ruth calmed us down with a very slow version of My Funny Valentine. The evening ended with Clam Chowder.
A very satisfying menu and even with a few regulars missing the band sounds better every month. The folks at Sunderland on Saturday (the Sunderland Big Band Competition this Saturday, 5th March at Manor Quay - Sir Tom Cowie Campus, Charles St., St Peter's, Sunderland. It starts at around 11 a.m. their slot is 3 p.m). and Blaydon Jazz Club next Thursday (March 10) are in for a treat. Miles Watson
