This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Find me something better to do on a Thursday afternoon in South Shields

"Something better to do?" Impossible! - this is The Place!
The shrinking Maine Street Jazzmen played to an expanding audience at Rosie's this afternoon.
As always when trumpet man Harley is missing there is a sense of disappointment as Ray is a key figure. However, once the band get going with Herbie taking over the lead the absence of Ray becomes less pronounced and by closing time it was 'Ray who?'
I joke - hurry back King.
Drummer Mike was even humbler this week as he played without a bass drum! Such is the strength of Alan Rudd's basslines the rhythm section didn't stop swinging!
Soon, Olive took a Sentimental Journey Home and all three songs were spot on. Jim sang Gonna Get A Girl, Way Down Yonder, Avalon - Herbie sang the rest! It was a good afternoon with a good crowd.
