This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. New Century Ragtime Orchestra at Trinity Centre this Saturday - March 12.

Attention jazz-lovers! The NCRO are in concert next Saturday (March 12th) at the Trinity Centre, Gosforth High Street, at 8.00pm. Tickets are on sale at £10 from 0191 285 6130, or on the door on the night. This splendid eleven-piece orchestra plays music from the dawn of Ragtime in the 1890's through to the early swing era of the 1930s. They will perform works by composers such as Scott Joplin but also the jazz and hot dance music of the 1920s and the early swing era, as played by bands like the Red Hot Peppers, California Ramblers, Ben Selvin, McKinney's Cottonpickers, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, all lovingly recreated from the original sheet music and painstakingly scored for the full ensemble. Also featured are the charming vocals of Caroline Irwin and the virtuoso sax/clarinet work of compere Steve Andrews.
