The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz is all around

On Tuesday I was invited by the North East Music Co-operative (NEMCO) to a musical event which has helped to solve a question often asked of me and by me. "Where will the next generation of jazz musicians come from?" In truth they must be all around us. At yet another church venue in Gosforth (All Saints) I was privileged to see and hear about 100 young people performing a variety of traditional and swing pieces. Mack the Knife, Bandstand Blues, I'm beginning to see the light, Fire Dance and Blue Skies were just some of the delicacies served up. Take a bow Sue Belshaw and all you other dedicated leaders.

It's good to see the kids being appreciated, & the senior band were particularly good. I have to admit a vested interest, as my son Gabriel plays drums for the 'Intermediate wind band'. Eric & I are trying to get the boy to swing, but so far he's much more into rock music!
