The last time I heard Empirical they had Jay Phelps on trumpet which gave the frontline a nice fat sound. Last night – bonfire night – the fireworks were missing. Instead we had a measured quartet with Facey the man in the spotlight.
The young man is a good player with an appealing sound and no shortage of inventive powers. However, this concert, ostensibly a tribute to Eric Dolphy, required a bellyful of fire power such as the late altoist possessed in abundance and tonight that wasn't much in evidence.
Indeed there were times when the pervading sepulchral atmosphere was reminiscent of an MJQ (Modern Jazz Quartet) concert. This was partly due to the presence of the vibes (also an excellent player by the way) and the almost churchlike setting of the Old Town Hall. Clapping after solos was perfunctory. Not, I hasten to add because of any deficiency in the soloists who also wrote most of the pieces but because, I suspect, a fear amongst the sparse audience that they might be struck by a thunderbolt for showing such irreverance. We should have clapped all the harder because the one thing this gig needed was a thunderbolt.
A plus point, just as Liz remarked on how well turned out the Laurie Holloway Trio were, Empirical too were also suited and tied. I liked it. Maybe I'm old school (no maybe about it I hear someone cry) but I'm reminded of an article by Lockjaw Davis some years back. 'Jaws' said, “If I get dressed up and fork out good money for a concert ticket I sure don't want to see some guy on stage wearing a sheet.”
