Cascade: Marrows, Kahn and Yardley chirp away in the undergrowth whilst Wilson soars above them escaping the repeated riffing that's going on down below. Yardley shuts up shop with a drum solo.
Prelude For the Departed: Based on the spirituality of John Coltrane's music, it offers the opportunity to dwell upon those we've known who left us before paying their dues.
P&P: The initials represent Wilson's two mentors Ian Peake and Paul Welch. It's a strange mix. Sometimes there's an air of swing about it but it doesn't last long before the turbulent modern textures take over. It's all very clunky.
Lullaby: A beautiful, melodic composition in 3/4 time. Tenor, guitar and bass create the soporific effect of the nicest dream you've ever had.
The Bear and the Wolf: The title track merges two themes each representing one or other of the two creatures. It's done effectively building up to a powerful climax before gently subsiding.
Södermalm: Named after a district of Stockholm that Wilson knows well his feelings for the district expressed in both the composition and his angular solo.
Mr. Fox: Inspired by a regular garden visitor and a John Scofield groove. Marrows digs deep into the groove and Wilson blows the cobwebs off the ceiling. Yardley makes his presence known as does Kahn albeit less 'up front'.
Ever interesting, never boring, well worth checking out. Lance
