This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Newcastle Jazz Festival - Day Two: the Alexia Gardner Quintet -June 27

Alexia Gardner (vocals); Alan Law (piano); Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Jude Murphy (bass, backing vocals); Abbie Finn (drums).

Alexia never fails to delight. Unique interpretations of tried and tested standards delivered in her own individual style.

I'd heard her singing them all before yet they seem to come out differently each time - the mark of a true jazz singer.

Before Alexia had cast her intoxicating spell on Cheek to Cheek, Harry Keeble had set the woods on fire with a blistering solo on Miles Davis' Four that pushed the Mercury even higher. Unfazed by the heat, Alexia and the rhythm section  continued with It Might as Well be Spring; The Way You Look Tonight; Mo Better Blues; No Woman, No Cry; Every Day I Have the Blues and, finally, an instrumental version of St. Thomas.

The real deal!
