The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rod Mason Quartet @the Moor Club, Stockport - June 7

This turned out to be a very interesting gig with lots of great tunes, ten in total, five per set. Although Rod had brought along three horns to play, he featured only his tenor sax during the first half of the two hour show. His high energy playing was well in evidence tonight and he seemed to inspire his bandmates to greater heights.

Paul Hartley was in multi-tasking mode announcing  tunes and playing some fine guitar solos as well as making sure the lighting was up to scratch. I think it was Paul who suggested the Sam Jones composition  Bittersweet  and Rod  really nailed this 32 bar theme. The powerhouse drummer Dave Walsh was the ideal person for this group and  his time-keeping is excellent especially when bossa novas are called for. 

Ken Marley made a big impact when he soloed on a tune that is normally played as a ballad but this time it got a fast bossa nova treatment You Don't Know What Love is. Ken's fingers were flying!

It was a good audience tonight, I noticed some regulars, many new faces and some  old ones that I had not seen for ages.
