In 1938 the British Ministry of Information, anticipating war, created morale-boosting posters which read “Keep Calm and Carry On.” In more recent times, that typically upbeat British saying has been adapted with all sorts of serious, humorous, and even obscene quips printed on t-shirts. From the intellectual, “Keep Calm and Zen On” to the absurd, “Keep Calm and Avoid Zombies,” and many others, the “Keep On” idea kept on, literally. Oceanside Highway, the latest single from stalwart trumpeter/composer/producer/author Keith Fiala is, without doubt, a perfect musical pause – a calming and most enjoyable break – from today’s chaotic times.
A solidly hip rhythm bed delivered by
bassist, Sean O’Bryan Smith, drummer, Rob Fedson and the leader’s keys launches
things before the memorable call-and-response melody is stated by Fiala’s lush
horn. Ace guitarist, Billy Denk offers a terrific, melodically-driven solo.
Denk’s ride is so well-played that it is assured that young guitarists will
copy it the way they did that with Grant Geissman’s solo on Chuck Mangione’s
classic, Feels So Good. The melody on Oceanside Highway is uber-magnetic
and the tempo and overall vibe is suave and soothing. Fiala presents a tasty,
laid-back ride, demonstrating ultimate command of his horn and deep respect for
melody and listener. The vibe across this entire track is a cool portrait of
California cruising with the top down, cool breezes in one’s hair, and
spectacular seascapes all around.
Oceanside Highway is a superb presentation. Grab it, a t-shirt and the car keys and
take off for all points - most enjoyable. Nick Mondello
