This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Record Store Day at a shop somewhere near you (Sat. 12)

This year's Record Store Day is set for Saturday (April 12). It's the day when retailers from all over the UK and beyond step up to promote all things vinyl, CD and, quite possibly, other formats (cassette tapes?, 78s? vintage cylinder?). Some shops open early, providing hot drinks and snacks to keep punters fed and watered. From a crate of LPs priced at £1.00. a piece to shrink-wrapped new, 'must have' vinyl at eye-watering prices, there is something for every taste and pocket. 

In the BSH heartland several shops will be participating, including no fewer than four in Newcastle city centre: Beatdown on Bewick Street (near Central Station ), just around the corner is Vinyl Guru on Westgate Road, up on Nun Street (o/s the Grainger Market) there is Reflex and just off High Bridge in Old George Yard you'll find RPM Music. And just a short bus ride away, not too far way out west, located in the John Marley Centre, Benwell, is Beyond Vinyl.

Sunderland's Hot Rats on Waterloo Place, not five mins' stroll from Park Lane Metro station, flies the flag for Wearside. One notable absence on this year's RSD is JG Windows. For a century and more 'Windows of the Arcade' served everyone from vinyl record collectors to those thinking of buying a Gibson Les or Yamaha grand piano. Now sadly closed, the phrase 'use it or lose it' springs to mind. Support your local independent record shop on Record Store Day. Russell
