Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Album review: Elaine Dame - Reminiscing (self-released)

Elaine Dame (vocals - flute on tk 3); Chris Madsen (tenor/soprano sax on tks 4,5.6.9); Tom Vaitsas (piano, organ, Rhodes); Sam Peters (bass); Jon Deitemeyer (drums) + Victor Garcia (trumpet trumpet on tk 1); Art Davis (trumpet on tk 3); Neal Alger (guitar on tks 2,3); Alyssa Allgood, Christy Bennett (harmony vocals on tk 5)

Despite this being her third album I must confess that Elaine Dame is a new name to me. I always find it interesting to check out someone who's, reportedly, been round the block a few times. When those blocks are situated in  Chicago and NYC well, if you can make it there ...

Before directly channelling her creative juices to singing jazz Dame had a theatrical background and it occasionally creeps into her phrasing, enhancing it in the process, enabling her to relate to the storytelling aspect of the material on this album.

The nine tracks are all jazzified covers of songs that charted in the '70s for artists such as: Chaka Khan (Tell me Something Good); Bill Withers (Use me); The Little River Band (Reminiscing); Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here); Heart (Sing Child); Bonnie Raitt (Nothing Seems to Matter); Maria Muldaur (Midnight at the Oasis); Donna Summer (Last Dance) and Pablo Cruise (Love Will Find a Way).

The voice, whilst the jazz content is there, the end result leans more towards a bluesy, soulful feel and there's nothing wrong with that. The full-on jazz comes with the solos.

Madsen, Garcia, Davis, Alger and Vaitsas are all highly rated Chicago musicians and their contributions are what you'd expect when supporting a singer described by Time Out Chicago as "a jazz dynamo" and "a gem in the city's jazz vocal scene".

Well worth checking out. Lance
