This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rossano Sportiello: Live at the Flat in Greenwich Village (#123) - Jan. 14

#123 of Rossano Sportiello's Live at the Flat livestreams more than met the highest of standards set way back when with (lockdown) livestream #1. Pianist Sportiello's no frills presentation - one fixed camera - affords the listener/viewer the luxury of concentrating on the music without distraction. Joining our host this evening, Live at the Flat debutant, bassist Joey Ranieri and drummer Aaron Kimmel. 

Coleman Hawkins' swinging Bird of Prey Blues opened the show and, as usual, what a show it promised to be! Sportiello is elegance personified, sartorially and musically. Over his right shoulder stood Ranieri. Wonderful bass playing, from start to finish. At 23, a long, successful career lies ahead of him, that's for sure. Over Sportiello's left shoulder, drummer Aaron Kimmel, another of NYC's busier-than-busy jazz musicians. For this edition of the Greenwich Village livestream Kimmel was playing a 1959 vintage Ludwig kit. Sportiello explained he had recently acquired the kit and from now on it would be the 'house kit', adding, drummers wouldn't miss lugging their own drum kit up to his 17th floor apartment! 

Benny Carter's Synthetic Love, Stars Fell on Alabama, one number after another, this mid-January livestream was a joy to listen to. Call it 'mainstream', call it 'straight ahead', call it whatever you like, Rossano Sportiello's ongoing series of Live at the Flat is jazz at its online best. Russell
