This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Barb Jungr and her trio - Hallelujah on Desolation Row (Absolute)

Barb Jungr (vocals); Simon Wallace (piano, keys); Davide Mantovani (bass); Gary Hammond (percussion)

Eleven songs by two of the greatest contemporary wordsmiths -  Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Cohen provides five of them: Hallelujah, Slow, Tonight Will be Fine, Tower of Song and You Got me Singing whilst Dylan goes numerically two better with: Handle With Care, Desolation Row, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mississippi, Kansas City and New Morning.

Jungr, universally recognised as the finest current interpreter of the work of the two iconic composers, handles the words beautifully getting to the heart of the poetic substance they convey and yes, this is lyric poetry of the highest order. Desolation Row is perhaps one of the finest example of the genre, whether sung by Dylan or Jungr.

The accompaniment is equally au fait with the material providing just enough harmonic colour to raise it a notch above the folkier backing associated with most interpretations of the songs.

Release date for Hallelujah on Desolation Row is on January 31. It's an album that's well worth checking out. Lance
