This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Richard Iles Trio @ the Moor Club, Heaton Moor, Stockport - Jan. 5

A change in the line-up due to hazardous road conditions across the Pennines meant that bassist Ben Crossland and guitarist Jamie Taylor couldn't make it so two local musicians, Richard Wetherall and Uli Elbracht, were called in at short notice.

In spite of the heavy rain there was a good turnout for this, the first gig of 2025, and the audience seemed to like  what they heard which was a selection of well known standards plus one original tune, Secret Bossa, and a twelve bar blues making a total of nine tunes. 

Each musician got plenty of solo space and there were moments where the interplay got quite interesting which is what you would expect from players of this calibre. I'm a big flugelhorn fan and I was impressed with Richard Iles' sound.


It can be difficult without a bass player to keep the tempo together but the trio sounded like they were used to it.


A highspot of the gig for me was Cole Porter’s Love For Sale which opened the second set. This was followed by the aforementioned Richard Iles' composition Secret Bossa, segueing into the Johnny Green ballad Body and Soul.  The final number was I Remember You  which was a big hit for singer Frank Ifield many moons ago.
