Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rossano Sportiello: Live at the Flat in Greenwich Village (#122) - a NYE livestream

Rossano Sportiello's weekly lockdown livestream from his flat in Greenwich Village proved to be one of the few plus points of Covid times. As things began to return to something like normal (whatever 'normal' is), Sportiello, in common with musicians across the globe, took to the road to play to a real, live - as opposed to a livestream - audience. However, old habits die hard and Italian born, NYC resident pianist Sportiello has, whenever possible, continued to present livestreams.

Sportiello notched up no fewer than fifteen livestreams during 2024 (not bad going considering our host criss-crossed America and gave concert performances across Europe, Scotland included, during the year) and this NYE session took the form of a 'best of'. Milestones, evolving into a stride masterclass, opened the stream, Sportiello accompanied by NYC A-listers (they're all A-listers!), bassist Paul Sikivie and drummer Kevin Dorn. Over the next 90 minutes or so, Sportiello introduced a stream (no pun intended) of wonderfully talented musicians.

Trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso (a popular participant at the 2023 Classic Jazz Party on North Tyneside) and Evan Christopher (clarinet) sat side by side over Sportiello's left shoulder, likewise Harry Allen and Scott Robinson playing I Cover the Waterfront, the common denominator...all were totally relaxed, not to mention pretty darn good!

The rhythm section bass and drums pairings were sublime, variously Neal Miner (an Ear Inn regular) and Alex Raderman (in summer 2024 BSH heard drummer Raderman at Birdland with David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band), Keith Balla and many more. And then there was Evan Arntzen (clarinet), the brilliant Pasquale Grasso (guitar, Samara Joy), Turin born singer Roberta Gambarini and, if not the star of this show, a star of the future, Nathan Tokunaga. On a visit from his home in California to the Big Apple, schoolboy Tokunaga (yes, he's still at school!) played clarinet like a veteran. At some point, Nathan Tokunaga will land on these (UK) shores. When he does, go hear him!

Rossano Sportiello is a class act. Keep an ear open for a 2025 Live at the Flat livestream. They're never less than superb. Russell
