Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Great Afternoon in Brunswick - Sept. 12

Brunswick Methodist Church is home, temporarily or otherwise, to Gateshead Jazz Appreciation Society. Meeting fortnightly Thursdays (all welcome), jazz enthusiasts turn up to listen to and talk about (favourite?) recordings. This afternoon's gathering focused upon Art Kane's 1958 Harlem group portrait photograph of 57 musicians and the jazz associated with it/them.

Your correspondent, thinking it was a 2:30pm start, turned up fashionably late, half an hour late. The GJAS attendees looked round, their concentration disturbed. Apology offered, taking a seat, the thought occurred that BSH's Editor-in-Chief should look for someone else to compile the what's on listings...

Focusing on no. 17, E 126 St, selections were made: Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver et al. Your correspondent's contribution? Doxy (Sonny Rollins), as played by the Strictly Smokin' Big Band, didn't get an airing due to a malfunctioning CD player. An alternative selection proved more successful (the disc played) - Count Basie (Come Fly with Me from the Sinatra (Basie) Sinatra at the Sands live album).

Gateshead Jazz Appreciation Society is a friendly affair, the next meeting (Contemporary Piano & Jazz) is on Thursday 26 September. Why not give it a try? Oh, yes, it's a two o'clock start... Russell
