The audience knew full well not to take the band’s
title too literally and of course, as expected, a night of first class
entertaining jazz was delivered by a quartet that was enjoyed by both the
audience and themselves. Andrew's vocals featured on all the numbers striking
just the right balance between vocals and instrumental work.
A fine start was made with a number that never fails to please - The Way You Look Tonight. A nice piano intro and vocal from Andrew, great sax solo from Richie, both backed up with excellent drums and bass, that set the standard for the evening.
A lovely ballad, sensitively played and sung, I Can't Remember Love, taken from the Queen's Gambit (Netflix), was followed by Have You Met Miss Jones?
Cole Porter's From This Moment on featured Tony on bass with some nice drum backing from Sam.
After Is You is or is You Ain't my Baby? and That
Ole Devil Called Love, a lively original composition by Andrew, Merry
Go Round, followed and the set was brought to a close with Gershwin's How
Long Has This Been Going on?
A swinging version of the lovely Lerner and Loewe number,
On the Street Where You Live, was a fine start to the second set.
Sacha Distel's The Good Life featured Tony's bass
playing, followed by an up tempo Hallelujah I Just Love Her So.
Matt Bianco's Get Out of Your Lazy Bed, was followed by Love me or Leave me, and the classic Almost Like Being In Love.
Billy Joel's New York State Of Mind, Harry Warren's I Only
Have Eyes For You, and Tom Waits’ New Coat Of Paint almost finished the second set. However the audience demanded an encore so an up tempo A Foggy Day ended
the night on a high note.
An appreciative audience enjoyed the quartet making for another
successful guest band night.
With thanks to the staff of Dorman’s Club for their help and
support. Ron Hampton
