You'll have to excuse me as I'm getting old and senile but this Newcastle Jazz and Improvised Music Festival has me confused. When I was playing with the Storyville Stompers' reserve team a few hundred years ago I thought that jazz was improvised music. Now it seems it isn't. Roll over King Oliver, tell Louis the news. It's easy. Jazz is improvised music (mostly) but all improvised music isn't jazz. Improvisation can exist in a classical context and in rock and in various kinds of weird experimental music. I suspect you'll get jazz but also some of the latter.
Jazz is also steeped in blues, swings, is soulful, and played by skilled musicians. If it doesn't tick a number of these boxes it isn't jazz.
