Richard Davis (April 15, 1930 - Sept. 6, 2023)

One of the all-time greats, bassist Richard Davis, died on Sept. 6. My particular memory of him was that of hearing him with the J.J. Johnson Sextet at the 1984 North Sea Jazz Festival.  The programme notes stated that many view him as the best bassist in the world. A statement I went along with as did the DownBeat critics from 1967-1974. 

But it wasn't just as a jazz musician that he acclaimed fame. He played in symphony orchestras under the baton of Stravinsky, Stokowski, Bernstein, Boulez and Schuller as well as recording with rock and pop artists. Rolling Stone in their Illustrated History of Rock and Roll, said, referring to Van Morrison's album Astral, "Richard Davis provided the greatest bass ever heard on a rock album."
