The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Strictly Smokin' Big Band @ The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle - March 2

Hot on the heels of another sold out Sage Gateshead concert (featuring special guest Matt Ford) the Strictly Smokin' Big Band returned to the more humble surroundings of the Bridge Hotel. These days it's an occasional public performance in the pub standing in the shadow of Newcastle's Keep. As dusk turned to darkness with trains rumbling past on the East Coast mainline, members of the band arrived in time for a seven o'clock start.

As musicians and audience arrived at Castle Garth it came as something of a (pleasant) surprise to learn that the gig would, after all, be in the upstairs room rather than in the downstairs bar. A case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. The Buddy Rich arrangement of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy opened the show, Steve Summers impressing on alto sax. Small room, big band, the up close, visceral power of a top class band, there's nothing better.

Alice Grace took a trip on Route 66, the first of several outings this evening for the SSBB's top class vocalist. Things to Come, taken at a lick, featured some blistering trumpet work from band MD, Michael Lamb. With Matt Forster blowing tenor alongside alto saxophonists Keith Robinson and Steve Summers it became abundantly clear that all soloists from all sections were on top form. 

Pawel Jedrzejewski cuts a figure not unlike Freddie Green, seated, relaxed, yet, from time to time, he's let off the leash, cranking it up to great (pedal) effect. Make a point of hearing Pav on A Few Good Men, it's in the pad, it'll come round again sooner or later. 

Ms Grace returned to sing a few more. Some in the audience were hearing the band for the first time, they couldn't have been other than impressed! Let's Face the Music, My Favorite Things (wow!), Lost in the Memory - yes, this is one top class big band. 

The Strictly Smokin' Big Band will soon be touring the Harlem '58 show and in May (Thursday 25th) the band will be returning to the Bridge Hotel. It'll be quite some occasion. Russell
