Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Friday Night is Jazz Night on BBC4 (From 9:00pm)

Every so often, albeit not as often as we'd like, BBC4 dishes up the good stuff. Not that this comes without a degree of compromise such as tomorrow night when the evening kicks off with a couple of hours of Top of the Pops featuring such 1994 whizkid idols as Ride, Skin, Eternal Club House, Level 42 and other chart toppers of the time.

However, come 9:00pm, sanity prevails and we're treated to an eagerly anticipated programme centred around the late Ottilie Patterson.

This is followed by a couple of programmes featuring Oscar Peterson.

10:00pm: Words and Music with Oscar and Ella in conversation.

10:50pm: Oscar Peterson Trio at Ronnie Scott's.

11:20pm: Jazz Piano Gold featuring Basie, Monk, Duke, Oscar, Tracey and more.

00:20: A repeat of TOTP.

You can't win 'em all but, on this occasion, maybe I will, despite Gary Lineker, begrudgingly renew my licence fee. Lance

The Ottilie Paterson documentary was brilliant (and sad)! I was too young in the late 50's / early 60's to have registered her existence so it was a revelation to me. What a voice!!!
Highly recommended (I assume it's on i-player) if you missed it live.
