The Steve Oakes Band play at the Railway on the first Tuesday of the month always featuring a different guest musician. Tonight that guest was George King who contributed some fine solos throughout the evening on a Roland RD-300SX keyboard.
The total number of tunes played was twelve but the first set was longer than usual as seven numbers were performed. During the concert we heard a mixture of standards, bop themes and some well known compositions by Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk. This is a very versatile unit with a very extensive repertoire.
Ed Kainyek was in top form tonight and I was really impressed with the way he coped with that tricky tune written by the late Dan Grolnick - Nothing Personal. I have heard the band play this tune many times but tonight they really nailed it!
The rhythm section of Barras and Franks work well together and they provided great support for Steve who must have been well pleased with their efforts.
George King performed to a high standard and got into some nice swinging stuff on There Will Never be Another You and I'll Remember April. All considered it was another great night of modern jazz at the Railway.
The next jazz night at the Railway is Sunday June 12 with Cartledge, Wood, Hunt, and Hill. Mike Farmer
The Water is Wide; Turnaround; Love Letters; Blue and Green; Nothing Personal; I'll Remember April; Oleo; Song For my Father; There Will Never be Another You; If You Ever Come To Me; 'Round Midnight; Spain.
