This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Book review: Guy Hale - Killing Me Softly

A thriller, a strange romance, hardboiled crime, humour, supernatural - Killing Me Softly could be pigeon-holed into, not just any one of the above categories, but all of them!

The first volume of a trilogy - The Come Back Trail - tells the bizarre story of a nightclub singer/guitarist playing at a Nevada casino in a small, corrupt town. It may be in the same state as Las Vegas but there the resemblance ends. Jimmy Wayne can sing and play guitar but as a songwriter he's nowhere until...

...until he accidentally kills his girlfriend during the course of a drunken sex game that goes horribly wrong. The following morning, after he sobers up, he discovers he has  written his best song ever! A further series of events lead him to realise that he has to kill people to release his creative juices.

There's much more to it, he's in hock to a bigtime mobster who literally wants more than his pound of flesh and sends a couple of hitmen to get it. There's some great one-liners: "A verbal contract ain't worth the paper it's written on" and many many more. And, to give you a taste of the 'killer' songs, there's a scannable download inside the book.

I couldn't put it down and I eagerly look forward to books 2 and 3 of the series - Blood On The Tracks and All The World's A Stage. Lance
