On the first Tuesday of each month you can find Steve Oakes here at the Railway leading his excellent quartet plus a guest who tonight was trumpeter Aaron Wood, a fine player who I first heard playing in Mike Hall’s octet a few years ago. On that occasion I was very impressed by his performance and tonight he had no problem with the tunes that Oakes had chosen for the gig, the majority of which were be-bop classics. His sound tonight put me in mind of the late, great, bop pioneer Kenny Dorham who was a member of an early edition of the Jazz Messengers.
Steve opened the show with Oliver Nelson's familiar blues Stolen Moments and kept the use of his many effects pedals to a minimum for most of the tunes with the exception of John Scofield’s composition Keep Me In Mind when a Pat Metheny sound was employed.
Ed Kainyek played some powerful solos and he blended well with the trumpeter on all of the tunes. Gavin Barras brought his bow into play with his intro to Freddie Hubbard’s Little Sunflower which also included powerful solos from Wood and Kainyek. I do hope we hear more from this line up before too long as this is my kind of music. An integral component in this unit is drummer Tim Franks and he held it all together with no mishaps. A good gig!
The next jazz gig will be on Sunday May 8 with the Frank Griffith Quartet. Mike Farmer
Stolen Moments; Just Friends; Turnaround; I'll Remember April; Beautiful Love; Au Privave; Milestones; Anthropology; Little Sunflower; Keep Me In Mind; Bye Bye Blackbird.
