This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Matt Monro Story: One Voice @ The Customs House - May 21

Sinatra rated him, he was known as 'the singer's singer', enjoying international success, for a while living the life out in California, now, more than thirty seven years after his death, his legacy lives on, the name...Matt Monro. The Matt Monro Story: One Voice is Matt Monro Jnr's lovingly crafted tribute to his famous father. The show is on tour and yesterday (Saturday) it stopped off in South Shields.

The One Voice element is Monro, Matt Snr and Matt Jnr, the former seen and heard in still and moving images projected onto a screen, the latter on stage here at the Customs House, supported by a sight-reading piano (Stu Collingwood), bass and drums trio. The audio visual material, extensive narration (and a couple of songs) by Kelly Harris and Monro Jnr's performance told the story: Portrait of My Love; From Russia with Love; One Morning in May, Walk Away, Born Free. 

Comparison could be said to be invidious, nevertheless, in this instance it's all but impossible to resist a compare-and-contrast exercise. Matt Monro Jnr continues to enjoy a successful career, a singer in his own right, Matt Monro Snr lives on in the memories of those who heard him live or by way of his many George Martin-produced recordings. The Matt Monro Story concludes its tour with a run of seven shows in Scotland, the first of them this evening (Sunday) at Howden Park Centre in Livingston.
