Not at the Riverside, but I was at Teesside Uni when he played there and once in Bristol in the mid-eighties.
I was at the Riverside gig and to this day think it was the best live vocal performance (by a male artist) I've ever heard. Also had tickets to his aborted gig at Live Theatre when he was denied access to the UK due to his previous drug offences.
I was at the Riverside gig and agree – it was a mesmerising performance from Gil, ably supported by The Amnesia Express, a band brimful of talented, soul-jazz musicians. A friend asked me about the setlist and, a few songs aside, realise I am no longer sure which songs they showcased ... any idea?
