The Dean Stockdale Trio @ The Gala Theatre, Durham - March 25

(© Malcolm Sinclair)
Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

On a beautiful summer-like spring day Tony Eales introduced Dean Stockdale's concert in the Gala Theatre's main auditorium rather than in the second floor studio space. A mid-afternoon event in the studio meant it was easier to accommodate Stockdale's piano trio on the main stage rather than hastily rearrange the room. Strangely, the venue's grand piano wasn't available, seemingly in storage. Undeterred, our Darlington based pianist would make full use of his keyboard.

A set list comprising a double helping of Oscar Peterson, three GASbook staples together with three of Stockdale's accomplished compositions made for an enjoyable hour. The first call bass and drums pairing of Mick Shoulder and John Bradford more than met expectations. Stockdale's arrangement of Henry Mancini's Moon River set the standard, our pianist rooted in the tradition yet effortlessly imparting his take on the material.

Jimmy Van Heusen's It Could Happen to You (what a great number!), Jimmy McHugh's On the Sunny Side of the Street given an inventive treatment, and Stockdale's First Light, inspired by a recent visit to Prague, went down well with the one hundred plus audience. So much so, at the end of the hour, several copies of Stockdale's CDs found new homes.

To conclude his set, the affable Dean Stockdale, make that the affable trio, reprised Promise the Moon (the eponymous track from the pianist's second album) and, from Oscar Peterson's Canadiana Suite, the swinging Blues of the Prairies. Next month's concert on Friday 29 April in the studio space will feature the Riviera Effect, that's ex-pat American Pete Tanton (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Lloyd Wright (guitar) and today's drummer John Bradford. Book now on 03000 266 600 as it'll be yet another capacity audience. Russell
