Yet more recently discovered unreleased gems come tumbling from the vaults. This time in the form of alternate takes from Mingus' 1957 album Mingus Three plus, of course, the original tracks. They will be released as a de-luxe package available on double vinyl or CD.
Mingus solos effectively and at length throughout. No bass player from that era had such a rich, full, sonorous sound (and, indeed, few since).
Of equal stature musically if not physically is Hampton Hawes - a pianist I can never hear enough of. The greatest of Bud Powell's disciples, Hawes is at the top of his game - he even gets something out of Summertime. He digs deep on all of the tracks but perhaps it is on the ballad Laura that his creative juices really flow.
Dannie Richmond had had a turbulent musical relationship with Mingus over the years but they were soulmates here.
The album is scheduled for release on April 22 to coincide with what would have been Mingus' 100th birthday. Lance
