This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Album Review: Liz Terrell – It's All Right With Me

Inventive arrangements, songs well sung with clear words and a pleasing alt
o tone, a more-than-competent band, performing a varied set of music, so what's not to like? I loved it all.

People Make The World Go Round features lyrics about people on the street, with some street-type noises from the saxophone; the title track is sung intimately, 'with me' many times to round off the lyrics; Night And Day begins in fragments from bass and piano, then becomes a real swinger in the second part; Blue Monk is superb, with a wheedling sax which almost talks and a guitar solo reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix. The Fats Waller Medley gives us scat and a drum solo worth hearing. I could go on …

And all meaningfully rounded off with a song about community, What The World Needs Now.

Liz Terrell has performed many types of singing over the last 10 years, from musical theatre to cabaret to touring Europe in a gospel ensemble. She has studied jazz for the last five years and this is her debut album as a leader. Ms Terrell performs regularly as part of a bass/voice jazz duo and also with members of the band featured on this album.

I am pleased to be reviewing this CD round about the time of International Women's Day, as this album is making a solid contribution to the celebrations, although I don't know if our singer and the band had the intention of contributing. I especially liked the choice of songs which include a Cindy Lauper hit, the strange song about Harrison Crabfeathers, and an excellent version of Blue Monk. And very good value as the CD lasts for a full hour.
