Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jessica Williams (March 17, 1948 - March 12, 2022)

When I received the sad news that pianist Jessica Williams had died on March 12 it was quite an emotional moment. Although I didn't know her personally I remember vividly the concerts promoted by JNE that she gave at Corner House, Newcastle and Caedmon Hall, Gateshead. Two of the four concerts were with a trio and two were solo piano.

To say she was a world class performer is putting it mildly. To my ears she ranked alongside anyone from any era. That she was also a caring person was evidenced at a memorial for JNE supremo Chris Yates where she sent a message of condolence.

Chris' own appreciation of her phenomenal talent can be read in the text in the above image taken from his 2009 book Blue Horizons.

Jessica Williams was 73.

Very sadly missed. R.I.P.
