The first musical performance of the highly innovative Sound of Science festival saw the performance of the Element 78 suite. For those non periodic table experts, 78 is the number in the periodic for platinum. The set consisted of 6 continuous pieces all named after an element in the Platinum group in order of atomic weight these are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum.
The major property of these elements are there robustness and their ab
ility to sustain a lot of wear without tarnish - not a bad analogy for this performance. The music contained all the essential elements of a free jazz performance from dark and melancholy to light and frivolous. Throw in some cinematic passages and some high tempo wild stuff and you can get the idea.
Nash played some lovely passages alternating between upright piano and keyboard with a vibes style voice. Excellent support was provided by Malcolm, Michael and Fisher who all seemed in their element, the highlight of the evening has to be the magnificent playing of Byrne on saxophone who never fails to impress.
A cracking high value start to what I’m sure is going to be a scintillating festival. Steve H
