Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Per Møllehøj; Kirk Knuffke; Thommy Andersson - 'S Wonderful

Per Møllehøj (guitar); Kirk Knuffke (cornet/vocal); Thommy Andersson (bass)

A Dane, a Yank and a Swede walked into a Copenhagen recording studio and proceeded to make the world a better place by recording these nine fine tracks.

A mix of standards and originals. Lyrical, melodic, inventive and gently swinging - no drummer needed.

Møllehøj, is the epitome of taste his solos a delight, his comping a master class in rhythm, his empathy with his fellow travellers perfect.

American Knuffke's sound is so cool and relaxed - a sound that somehow evokes the spirit of both Bix and Chet with maybe a dash of Satch, Miles and Roy Hargrove whilst still retaining his individuality. His vocals too are plus points in an album that exudes plus points from here to breakfast time.

Bassist Andersson is very much an integral part both as a pivotal point and as a soloist. In both roles his harmonic sense is dominant without being overpowering.

With some albums the title can seem irrelevant - not in this case, it really is applicable! Lance.

Available Feb. 25 on Stunt Records.

Beale Street Blues; Elizabeth Town (KK); Same But Different (PM); Just Squeeze Me; 'S Wonderful; Can't See For Looking (KK); First Draft (PM); St. Louis Blues; A Brother and a Sister (PM)
