Steve Pimlott Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Feb. 13

Steve Pimlott (tenor sax); Richard Weatherall (piano); Ed Harrison (bass); Phil Bennett (drums).

The first two tunes were originals written by Steve, Where by Now and Take That as a No, followed by an interesting mixture of well known standards and ballads plus  a Coltrane number and one by Charlie Parker. 


There was a sizeable audience in attendance for this gig and I hope that the recent increase in the price of beer at this venue does not deter patrons from coming here in the future.


The rhythm section tonight did a superb job of backing Steve and they know just what to do in any situation.

I was pleased to see a few ballads in the set-list as I feel that this is where Steve really excels as indeed he demonstrated on a great version of Gershwin’s  Embraceable You where he played the verse. Here I thought the influence of Hank Mobley was apparent.


The next jazz gig at the Railway is Tuesday Feb. 15 with the Bim Williams Quartet. Mike Farmer
