Bebop Spoken There

Trevor Mires: ''My mum is a Dean Martin fan: I'm not, so I would grab my skateboard and get out of the house whenever I heard "Everybody Loves Somebody, Sometime." ". (Jazzwise, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

JAZZ NORTH’S NORTHERN LINE 2022-23 OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

(Press release)

Jazz North’s Northern Line scheme for the period 2022-2023 is now open for applications from artists across the North of England.

The 18-month programme supports northern artists to reach the next stage of their live performance career through subsidised touring and development in business skills across all areas of their work.

“We’ve spent a long time, and years of experience, listening to artists and industry experts to make Northern Line as flexible and unique to each artist as we can,” explains Jazz North’s Programme Manager, Heather Spencer. “It’s a massive privilege for us to meet and work with fantastic artists from across the north and help get their music heard by more people and on the stages they want to play.

We want to see northern artists equipped with the skills they need to manage the promotion and development of their work, with Jazz North as an approachable guide along the way. You bring the music, and we’ll bring the industry knowledge.”

The artists are picked from talent across the north and chosen by an independent panel of industry professionals, promoters, and musicians. Sitting on this year’s panel is Lucy Scott (Sage Gateshead), John Doran (The Quietus), Claire Umney (Jazz FM), Dennis Rollins MBE (musician), Sam Nicholls / whiskas (Music:Leeds), Santana Guerot (Band on the Wall) and Harkirit Boparai (The Crescent).

Successful applicants will perform at the Northern Line Showcase at Hull Jazz Festival in November 2022 in front of a public audience and invited music industry guests. Networking, marketing support, and refreshed assets are also on offer on the scheme, creating a bespoke experience for each artist.

Current Northern Line artist, Jemma Freese says: “Jazz North always go above and beyond for their artists. Not only do they create connections with artists and new networks, but they also help support artists with music, planning, networking, new ideas, how to release music and where to gig. They are incredibly thoughtful, kind, supportive and understanding of physical and mental health needs. Never short of ideas or solutions, they are always extremely enthusiastic about the artists and the music they make. They are without a shadow of a doubt the most supportive organisation in jazz.”
