This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) 606 Livestream: Tony Kofi and the Organisation - Feb. 19

Just like old times - a Saturday night livestream from the 606! And what a belter!

A hard-bop band led by one of the best, if not the, best bari players around. On tonight's performance I'd back Tony Kofi against anyone. He was in blistering, painstripping form. Chorus after chorus, the ideas flowed non-stop. The unladylike storm that hit London's arena had nothing on this guy.

Not that it was all powerplay. McCoy Tyner's Search For Peace, a tune Kofi dedicated to a friend's mother who'd recently died, was an exercise in tranquility. However, that was the exception, in the main it was Blue Note re-visited kicking off with Duke Pearson's Minor League followed by Pepper Adams' Boss Allegro. Kofi said that Adams was his all time favourite baritone player. If Adams had still be around I'm sure he'd have returned the compliment. 

Henry Mancini's Theme From Mr. Lucky found a nice groove and Fearsby and Whittaker dug deep driven along by Cater.

 The Organisation are a terrific organ trio to begin with - add Tony Kofi ...

Wes Montgomery's Full House and Pat Martino's Cisco ended the one hour live stream and I was left rueing that I wasn't there in person for the second set. Great set - Lance
