Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Paying one's dues

I took a seat on the bandstand and the guy who seemed to be the leader handed me a sheet of music.
I apologised and said "I don't read music,"
"Then you'll just have to busk" he replied.
I made to leave.
"Where're you going?"
"You told me to busk - I usually do okay outside the station."
"Not that kind of busking, just sit down and play as you feel"
I played as I felt and they sent for an ambulance!

They booked me for their next gig - I guess there aren't too many jazz alpine horn players around.
The leader  explained the universal language used to indicate the key signature - whatever that was.
Three fingers down indicated Eb, two fingers down was Bb and C was signified by forming the letter C with thumb and forefinger. For the sharp keys (#) one finger up was G and two fingers was D ... D seemed to be their favourite when I stood up to play!

"Do you play jazz?"
"No, but I drive one (Hyundai)."
"Can you improvise?"
"Yes, especially when my wife asks me why I stayed out all night - we were having a blow darling!"
I'm looking for a gig, a divorce and a music teacher - Andy Orfell
