Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Abbie Finn Trio @ The Lit & Phil - Feb 18

Abbie Finn (drums); Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Paul Grainger (bass)

Storm Eunice having put paid to my being at the long anticipated gig by the Francis Tulip Group at the Gala Theatre in  Durham, I was pleased to find that there were a couple of seats available at an otherwise full house for Lunchtime Jazz @ The Lit &Phil. These monthly concerts have showcased some of the best jazz players from the north east and further afield and today was no exception with the first (and hopefully not last) appearance of the Abbie Finn Trio.

North east audiences will be well acquainted with each member of the trio, all three having been seen in various ensembles and at regular jam sessions in the area but this was where they were at their most engaging, a tight  trio who had obviously worked hard together and were producing some excellent music. It may have been Abbie’s trio in name but there were no passengers and no prisoners were taken. This was a trio of equal partners, each player had space to shine and their enjoyment in each other’s musicality was plain to see.

There were original  tunes from the trio’s debut album 'Northern Perspective', recently heard on both the BBC and Jazz FM, and from their upcoming album, as yet untitled, as well as their take on a couple of standards. Eunice may have been wreaking havoc in Durham but the Abbie Finn Trio were happily creating their own storm in Newcastle. Glad I was there to see it. Sylvia
