Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Sunday Service - August 1

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Dave Archer (guitar); Will Sach (double bass)

Preacher Adrian Cox is once again in the country, for how long is another matter! Stints working across Europe have kept our clarinetist busy and today found him in London working with Kansas Smitty's mainstays guitarist Dave Archer and bassist Will Sach. Three great playersworking out on material by composers as diverse as Louis Alter, Irving Berlin, Spencer Williams, and one A.
Cox (Upper Street Serenade) made for an effortlessly swinging hour of jazz.

An online congregation of eighty plus parishioners fired off complimentary comments at a rate of knots although not quite as nifty as Adrian, Dave and Will took to swinging My Walking Stick! As hot as you like, superb! Our trio played Vincent Youmans' You Turned the Tables on Me, Adrian singing Sidney D Mitchell's lyrics.

Adrian mentioned last week's APPJAG awards, thanking all those who voted for him, even though he didn't win, our man graciously adding: The Globe up there in Geordieland won the Lockdown Innovation award! Playing clarinet or singing, Adrian has the ability to read the rate-of-knots online comments at the same time, at one juncture seamlessly interjecting greetings to Ella Hohnen-Ford - Good afternoon, Ella - as he sang the aforementioned Vincent Youmans' number. The boys signed off with I'm Afraid the Masquerade is Over.

Next week, to be confirmed, it's likely to be the same trio - Adrian, Dave and Will. Make a Facebook date with Adrian Cox Music, one o'clock.

Two thirds of today's trio - Dave Archer and Will Sach - will be 'up north' in Newcastle and Saltburn on Friday 20 August playing the music of Art Tatum with piano virtuoso Joe Webb (see right hand column for details).
