This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Tonite at the Globe - it's a knockout!

Tonight (Wednesday) an all-star sextet will be playing music from Miles Davis' 1971 Jack Johnson album. Miles was a big fight fan and when the opportunity arose to work on the soundtrack of Bill Cayton's documentary about boxer Jack Johnson it signalled the trumpeter's headlong rush into the lucrative world of rock music.  

Guitarist - and no mean drummer! - Tom Atkinson has assembled a cracking line-up to rock the Globe. Jack Courtney takes the role of Miles, Sue Ferris that of Steve Grossman and Bennie Maupin, Alan Law will handle the keyboard wizardry of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, and the bass and drums pairing of Deon Krishnan and Jeff Armstrong are set to do justice to Michael Henderson, Dave Holland, Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette. Oh, yes, Tom Atkinson will be cranking it up à la John McLaughlin and Sonny Sharrock. No problem, eh?! 

In addition to the Jack Johnson album (Miles didn't care for the original artwork's early twentieth century period design, an alternative design followed), expect some fireworks of the kind McLaughlin produced when leading the incendiary Mahavishnu Orchestra. 

Tickets booked for the gig at Cluny 2 remain valid, otherwise it's seven quid on the door, eight o'clock start. Will it be loud? Here's hoping! Russell

As a matter of historical interest. Jack Johnson won the Heavyweight Championship of the World when he knocked out Tommy Burns in Melbourne on Boxing Day, 1908. Many consider Johnson to be the greatest heavyweight champ of all time but in Newcastle, Tommy Burns' name is also remembered as he was once, after he'd retired from the ring, the publican at The Forth on Pink Lane, just across from the old Jazz Café and what is now the Prohibition Bar. There should be a blue plaque!
