The music of Duke Ellington. Perfect. Adrian Cox's Sunday Service keeps on coming up with the goods and this one couldn't be other than terrific and it was. Joining Adrian this afternoon, two of Kansas Smitty's stalwarts - guitarist Dave Archer and bassist Will Sach*.
Upwards of eighty online parishioners were treated to a non-stop swinging session, Cox exclaiming: Yes, Will Sach, swinging! Truth be told, all three swung like crazy. Taking it down, Adrian sang an impassioned I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good, on Drop Me Off in Harlem first Will, then Dave crafted swinging solos, Adrian's clarinet playing never less than swinging, vocals to match. To close a fabulous hour of Duke's music, the boys went out on It Don't Mean a Thing If it Ain't Got That Swing.
* Dave and Will are coming to the Lit & Phil. A week on Friday (August 20) they'll be joining pianist Joe Webb to play the music of Art Tatum! Seat reservations are flying out the door. Call the Lit & Phil first thing Monday - 0191 232 0192 - to be sure of your seat. Russell
